Crown Molding: Spring Angles and Corner Planning

Compare spring angles, corner measurements and test cuts before planning a crown molding installation.

Check the Spring Angle

Crown profiles do not share one universal cutting setup. Identify the intended spring angle, measure the actual corner and use the profile manufacturer’s cutting table or a qualified installer’s method. Flat compound cuts and nested cuts use different setups. Test both adjoining pieces on offcuts before cutting the final lengths.

Planning a Coped Corner

A coped inside joint follows the adjoining profile rather than relying only on a miter. Compare the profile shape, wall variation, material and finish when deciding whether coping is suitable. Do not assume one numeric saw setting or gap tolerance works for every profile and room.
