Canadian Lumber Grades: Select vs. Common for Trim

Compare the specified grade, visible knots, surface preparation and finishing requirements before ordering trim.

Specify the Grade and Finish Together

Ask the supplier to identify the species, grading system, grade and permitted defects for the exact product. Grade names are not interchangeable across all species or suppliers. Compare sample lengths for knots, joints, machining quality and straightness. Ask the finishing provider how primer and paint will address the selected substrate and any visible resin or colour variation.

Agree on the Acceptance Standard

Use a finished sample to agree on visible defects and the expected surface before ordering the full quantity. Warranty coverage, exclusions and maintenance come from the actual supplier and installer; no one grade automatically guarantees a result or a particular service life.
